The Scout Centre.

Degnetoften   is the name of a modern activity centre, built by the YMCA Scouts, Ribe-Hviding scout group, built from 1972 - 1977.The centre is situated North East of the village Vester Vedsted, 8 kilometres South West of Ribe.

Drive on the main Road A 11 south from Ribe. In the village Egebæk-Hviding turn right at the sign V. Vedsted and Mandø. After app. 4 kilometres, at the start of V. Vedsted, there is a sign to the right, saying “Degnetoften”.

The centre is on a former sports area. The land, being one of the most beautiful spots in South Western Jutland, is a natural amenity, and under normal circumstances tenting is not allowed. The open land is app. 1 hectare. In all directions there are birch trees, fir  trees, and pine trees. Along the southern boundary there is a small brook. On the open land is grass and heather.

The buildings consist of a Central building and 2 wings, built of “log cabin” boards. The roof is turf. Inside most walls are pine boards. The central hall has walls of undressed planks.
The house, 331 sq. m. in size, sleeps 56 people, is well insulated, and is heated by oil (central heating).
The centre is thus suitable summer and winter.

Placed as it is in undisturbed nature only 2 km. from the Wadden Sea and 8 km. from Ribe, the Oldest Town of Denmark, makes the centre suitable for scout camps, youth gatherings, and camp schools.

Outings and Excursions.

Ribe.
Denmark’s oldest town with narrow, winding streets and lanes, and with many houses from the 16th century. About 9.000 inhabitants. First mentioned in documents about 860, as Ansgar built the first church in what is now Denmark. Since 948 it has been a bishop’s town and centre of the diocese.

Ribe Cathedral from the 12th century with 48 m. tall Civic Tower, from where you will find a magnificent view of large parts of Southern Jutland and the Wadden Sea.

Sct. Catherine’s Church with the best preserved Blackfriars’ Monastery in Denmark. Viking Museum (also containing Middle Age department) in face of the railway station, Queden’s Gård (a museum of 16th to 20th centuries), Art Museum, Viking Centre (revitalisation of the Vikings arts and crafts) just outside the town centre, City Hall from 15th century open to the public. “Skibbroen”, Denmarks oldest harbour with Flood Column and “Johanne Dan” (copy of 1835 sailing ship).

Weiss’ Stue in the town Centre, from where the night watchman starts his round in the summer.

Castle Mound (castle destroyed in 1660) with statue of Queen Dagmar.

Surroundings.

Mediaeval churches in Vester Vedsted and Hviding within short distances.

Wadden Sea Centre in Vester Vedsted, with exquisite exhibition and show room. Wadden Sea and dikes and from here low tide road and elevated road to Mandø.

Mandø is a low marshy island surrounded by sand banks. Distance from V. Vedsted is 11 km. of which 6 km. is through the sea.

It is recommendable to ride on the Mandø bus, a special tractor with a trailer. In the summer the rides are scheduled, according to the tides, in winter special arrangement must be made. Sometimes the trailer is a Double Decker, which gives a magnificent view, as the bus crosses the dike. The elevated road is covered in water at high tide, i. e. twice a day. The low tide road is only permitted for commercial vehicles. Even on the elevated road it is recommended to seek information about the tide, since is can be very dangerous to be caught by the tide in the ocean.

Farther away.

Rømø (25 km.) with the best beach in Denmark, is reached by a 9,2 km. long dam through the tidal sea. From Havneby on Rømø there is ferry connection to Sylt in Germany.
